Overview
Wong (b. 1994) obtained his BA degree majoring in Visual Arts from the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2018, and MFA degree with a major in Transformation of Traditional Language from Central Academy of Fine Arts under the School of Experimental and Sci-Tech Arts in 2023.
Wong's practice is rooted in traditional landscape painting techniques, and employs traditional painting materials. Through repeated smudges and washes on silk, the originally vibrant canvas takes on a dark, ambiguous, and hazy effect. Wong Shunyu constantly considers how viewers perceive and experience his work, and how the work itself can better engage with the viewer. This is why he chooses silk, a translucent material that evokes a sense of physical connection. Throughout his creative process, he incorporates techniques such as dyeing, printing, weaving, and embroidery, lending his work a sense of uncertainty.
This is also connected to Wong Shunyu's own experience, having moved from city to city since childhood. He considers himself a nomadic person, and therefore seeks connections between himself and place. His paintings are an extension of this theme.
Most recently, his Solo/ Duo Exhibition includes: Acclimated Difference (Hexagon Gallery Shen Zhen 2023); Whispers of the South (AM Space Hong Kong 2022); When I Left Home for 333 Days (AM Space Hong Kong 2021), and his past Group Exhibition includes: CAFA Graduation Exhibition (CAFA Art Museum Beijing 2023); Ink & Fluidity (Galarie Koo Hong Kong 2021); Shining Moment (TANG Art Foundation Hong Kong 2021). He is also the recipient of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Future Artist Award 2023 from He Art Museum, Shunde.
