Paul Nugent (b. 1964, Ireland) is a Dublin-based painter whose work engages with history, memory, and the intersections of photography and painting. Drawing on photographic reproductions of eighteenth-century artworks, Nugent reimagines religious symbolism and visual narratives in a distinctly contemporary format, exploring the symbolic furnishings of the inter-text and the shifting role of image as cultural memory.
He holds a BA in Fine Art from the National College of Art & Design, Dublin, where he also lectures in Fine Art Painting. Nugent has been awarded multi-annual Visual Arts Bursaries from The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon (2004–2006, 2008), and completed a residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris. His work has been exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally.
Nugent’s paintings are represented in public and private collections including the Office of Public Works (Ireland), the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin City University, and Fidelity Insurance, Boston. He continues to live and work in Dublin.
